Bigger isn’t always better

Feb 04

In evaluating Sonja’s speech this week, I noticed that she was effective even without grand gestures and varied vocals.  Sometimes the best speeches are the simplest.

Don’t always jump to the conclusion that every speech can be improved with bigger gestures, more varied vocal variety, or fancier words.

Feel the heart of the speech.

  1. I totally agree — and I learned this lesson the hard way.

My project was to do an interpretive reading. I guess I didn’t read through the entire project because I missed the fact that I wasn’t supposed to “act” out the reading in any way — not even eye contact. My evaluator had read through the project and noted my blunder in her evaluation.

I was surprised — but it was a great lesson that sometimes our voice is the most effective communication tool that we have!

  2. Our voice is very powerful indeed. Your evaluator did a great job catching that.
