Thanks John. You're right, question nine,"Did you ever have a crush on a friend’s boyfriend or girlfriend?" has the potential to make some people uncomfortable.

As the Table Topics Masters, I didn't ask this question to anyone at random, but rather I chose a Toastmaster who has previously demonstrated a terrific ability to delight audiences with his candid, personally-revealing stories.

When I asked him question nine last night, he was voted the best Table Topics Speaker!

Wow, Kevin! Nice job kicking off the table topics questions. I especially love your political question to relieve the tension.

Your questions are really good too. I would look forward to answering all of them. Perhaps question #9 could be awkward for some people.

Excellent setup. You even included timing into the flow. Great job!

John, several people said they really enjoyed the way I hosted Table Topics. I took your advice and nixed any questions that were boring.

Let me know how you think I did (the video is embedded in the article): http://www.kevinkane.com/2010/09/4-new-ways-to-be-a-great-toastmasters-table-topics-master/

John, I never ask Table Topics questions like, "What is your favorite gardening tool?" With no disrespect intended to gardeners, I only ask questions that are:

- interesting to everyone in the audience
- somewhat controversial but can spark curiosity and healthy debate -- e.g., "Is there a link between video games and violence?" or "Should cell phones be permitted in schools?"

The best Table Topics are those that matter and that people have opinions about.
