Make it Real Part 2
Mar 17
Following on from yesterday’s post about making it real, here’s the start of Firework by Katy Perry:
Do you ever feel like a plastic bag, drifting through the wind wanting to start again?
This is an example of taking an abstract concept and making it real. The issue is that the analogy falls flat. Who on earth can relate to a plastic bag? Tumbleweed perhaps, but not a plastic bag!
Check out the video for yourself:

Not sure I agree with you here.
I immediately think of the floating plastic bag in the movie American Beauty. The image gives the main male character what he considers the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen. He realizes that there is “an entire life behind things”; and that “sometimes there’s so much beauty in the world I feel like I can’t take it … and my heart is going to cave in.”
Its in the interpretation that makes it real, in my humble opinion.
Karen,
Great insight! Perhaps Katy is thinking of that exact image.
Thank you!
John.
